This is a song about a couple who cares so much about what other people think and opine on their relationship and life (perhaps they're not very accepted by friends and family), that they're prejudiced by it.
Now one of them is highlighting this to the partner: the relationship, the space, is theirs and they can't allow people to interfere in such a way. Telling him to not care about the bad things these people have to say and stop letting them to invade your space and disturb the love and desires they fell to each other. It's really your own choice to listen to them or not so when she sings "invented the fear" it means exactly that, that this fear (of what people suggest / said / will say) is only inside.
