So no-one has any ideas on what the meanings may be? Strong enough to die for after “just one beat of your heart” or maybe in one?

Why did Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross choose this song/these lyrics for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo? Every time I hear it, in context of the film, I find myself thinking of all the girls Martin Vanger politely “invited” to his basement over the years.

The second option for this song is when Lisbeth Salander rolls up with a charismas gift to Mikael Blomkvist and sees him walking arm in arm with Erika Berger, this after she tells her father of how she met someone he would approve of, and then she gets disappointed in someone she is so fond of.

A "rock in the sea" can be viewed as a holdfast, something to tie down to. A rock in the sea can also be viewed as something that does not erode and wither away so easily.
