It sounds like the person he's talking to is very self-destructive and maybe even suicidal. He listens to him (or her) "pour out his hate in [his] hands" and tries to encourage them. Ultimately they have (or had) the same opinions on life and probably even the same habits of drug abuse, so he cannot be of much help, if for no other reason than he feels like a hypocrite. It's possible that despite having the same opinions, they have different outlooks on life (in the big picture) "we all write songs abut life, we just sing them different", which would explain why the speaker doesn't understand why this person is dying inside.

This is the scenario I imagine: Both believe that life is meaningless, but the one has hope in Christ and the other doesn't. The speaker wants to share his faith, but doesn't know how because he's not very confidently rooted in his faith. He probably professes as a Christian, but does not follow Christ with his life and doesn't know much about his own faith. The last line implies that the death of this person shook him; talking to them intoxicated him with doubt and reopened the wounds of his past. He's hoping reflection on this person's death will wake him up from his own destructiveness.
