When I first heard this when I was younger I thought it was about death... I don't know why I thought that.
Listening it to it again, I think its about someone trying to reach out to someone who's going through a tough time, like depression.. or even someone who might be contemplating ending their life?
But I think what most people said here is right, its about protecting someone you love... and wanting to take their pain away.
