Here's what the song means.

It is about the same mistake so many young girls make. The girl begins a relationship with a boy that she thinks she loves or that she thinks is the one for her. The song begins with her reminiscing about the time when her heart caught the fever - the moment she laid eyes on her dream relationship. Although she is already in a relationship, she now sees the boy of her dreams and suddenly realizes that she missed her opportunity by not patiently waiting for the right one to come along.

The song creates a comparison between her current new boyfriend and the one that she now sees but cannot have. Her boyfriend is sweet and she had some feelings for him, but the other boy caused a heart-felt feeling she had not previously experienced - making her realize her mistake. She senses the boy is the real deal. Her boyfriend initially brought the same excitement that people experiencing when they see something they desire on a post card — fantasizing the experiencing of the real place, but once they have experienced that true place “or relationship”, the importance of the postcard now fades. Same with the diamond - any girl would be excited to receive a diamond ring, but if they learn that the diamond came from another ring, disappointment sets in and they feel cheated. The girl is now disappointed because but she accepted an imitation relationship and missed out on genuine love. She was not able to see this until she sees him and feels the immense emotional effect he has on her. But it's too late - he shows up, she sees him, she develops strong romantic feelings, knows that she can't have him, and now feels her life is forever ruined - knowing that the one true love for her will walk away, never to be seen again.
