Cover art for Sleep Forever lyrics by Portugal. The Man

Basically, regardless of how many religious followers live the majority of their adult life devoting themselves to "Him" (God, obviously), he (John- the singer) is not afraid of what is to come, despite his sins ("Cause we are all rebels"). Instead, it is almost as if when he dies, he hopes to leave the physical life all behind ("I hope the light that I become can sleep for once"). Also, it is hard to ignore the strong religious context, but overall I believe this song speaks against organized religion and that living life and raising your children to have a fulfilling and honest life is what life is all about rather than worrying and fearing "Him", while being blinded by the corrupted and fucked up society.

My Opinion

Couldn't agree more.

Well said. If I may add something, I feel that he describes at one point "We're just like old lovers who never leave home," then "we may not grow money-- but man, we grow old." I think if put along side the singer's anti-organized religious context, he's suggesting the idea that instead of working to go to Heaven ("I don't want to work forever") in life, that life on Earth could be Heaven if we just let it be.
