To me it's about how much loving (and losing) someone can change your life. You realise how easy but also empty your life was before you met this person. Everything feels special, they become your world and make you feel alive, so when they leave, you feel lost. You're back to just existing instead of living, so secretly you'll always wait for this person to return. I think the chorus sounds as if he was letting her go to explore the world and to take advantage of an opportunity, even though he knows he'll miss her badly and feel like a lonely cat with no one to relate to.
