i know this is only a half formulated thought but to play with the religious beliefs idea maybe this song is one person of a relationship talking about the other a liar
specifically they lie about their beliefs?? maybe to themselves or their parents/community to be more accepted
"you were only half willing to follow the son" saying the person is hesitant to follow their religion
"but if we’re so different then why did we start this?" the one saying this isn't religious so they're rhetorically asking why they started this if they really were as different as they claimed to be in their views
"you’ve been alone and you’re singing to the sun cause you know you’re on your own" the person deep down thinks that god doesn't exist though of course like i said they lied? about it
maybe
or just lying in general like "your framework doesn’t hold against the feet of us giants" could be a way of saying they see through this person's lies and like the lies won't work on them because they see past the bull shit
and the last part of the lyrics could fit that too
idk it's a long shot but it's just an idea to work with i felt like i had something then i just kinda lost it, i wish i knew what this song really meant
i agree with you. i was thinking along the same lines.
also sounds a little like the speaker is possibly atheist and being sort of critical of the other person's religious beliefs (possibly christian?) in general. lines like "your framework doesn't hold" and "you're singing to the sun" sounds kind of like they're saying "your beliefs are illogical/they don't hold up" and "you're praying to nothing/praying in vain"

@soulglowactivatur
She also says "If I believed in God" saying that she doesn't but the person she's speaking to, who also doesn't, is lying about it or is just very loose with their following. Or maybe even that they do believe but they're one of the people who uses religion as a weapon and she disagrees with their use, claiming that their "framework doesn't hold" because it's taking bits and pieces to bend the meaning to their will.
