i loved all the comments. i see how this song can be interpreted as a friend zone thing, it may even make more sense than how i see it but considering Damian was going through a divorce at the time i think its not what he meant.
i think this song is about giving up on a relationship. the fact that ur with someone doesnt mean u dont expect them to change. anyone will tell u thats no way to start a relationship and a terrible place to be but it doesnt mean u dont love the other person and want to be with them. its just maybe not whats best for u. so u try to do whats right but....thats not always easy to do.
every verse is in a different time frame- the first is realization and break up, the second is doubt and reasoning and the third takes place a long while from then, when he realizes he just cant get past it.
"I've been waiting for months, waiting for years, waiting for you to change.
Aw, but there ain't much that's dumber, there ain't much that's dumber
than pinning your hopes on a change in another."
hes been in this relationship forever. and maybe he always expected some change from the other person. he hopes their relationship will be better and he'll b happier when that happens but realizes thats prob a dumb way to go about it. he realizes hell never get that. so he finely gives up on waiting ends it.
"So I been sitting around, wasting my time, wondering what you been doing.
Aw, and it ain't real forgiving, it ain't real forgiving sitting here picturing someone else living."
he after the breakup, trying to get over that person but cant help but wonder what shes doing, a natural thing when u stop seeing someone uve been so close to for so long. and u start forgetting why u ended it, why u cant be with them instead of imagining where they are and what theyre doing right now.
"I've been hoping for months, hoping for years, hoping I might forget.
Aw but it don't get much dumber, it don't get much dumber
than trying to forget a girl when you love her."
its been a while but nothing has changed. hes still in love with her. he cant forget. if at first he thought it was dumb to stay with her and wait for her to change, now hes finding it dumb to try and forget her.
and hes right. ending a relationship before u fall out of love, even if its the right thing to do, is practically impossible to get over. our culture teaches us love is everything, love is enough and nothing else matters. its not true, but how do u forget about someone u love so much?
