I personally do not believe this song is ABOUT LSD.
However, I believe it may have been INSPIRED by an LSD REALISATION.
LSD sparks abstract realisations about fundamental truths and I believe that lennon may have realised that love is an beautiful philosophy and if everyone only lived by the rule of pure love then there would be no war, no hatred, no starvation, no greediness etc.
The lyrics to the song revolution support this, but argues that the philosophy is flawed and there is no real implementable solution (yet). And, almost all of lennon's work here on was to propose living by the philosophy of peace and love, but before he had taken LSD he was not all about this.
Anyone who has taken the drug can see that the song was certainly inspired by LSD, but I don't think it is ABOUT it.
