Tangle in This Trampled Wheat

This song is about having home sickness after leaving home, and the feeling of displacement and loneliness one encounters when they leave what they are familiar with. Basically, throughout the song, the persona Matsson creates is one who is struck by blemishes of nostalgia as he or she observes their surroundings and draws strenuous links of familiarity between their new environment and the environment they have moved to.

However, they resolve themselves to the fact that they are just 'a tangle in this trampled wheat,' in that they don't fit in with the new suppressed and harsh environment they've found themselves in. And they 'shirk-a like a losing dog,' as in they have become defeatist, and refrain from their surroundings because they are so suppressing.Matsson creates a contrast of his home, 'the weather beaten plains,' and the city that 'sounds the same,' and is no where near as romantic for the persona as is his or her true home.

However there is an optimism about the song when he says 'I'm not leaving alone,' in that while the persona is physically leaving a lone they are metaphorically leaving with an armory of memories and character-defining experiences from his home, that will stay with them and help them feel comforted in the new environment.

Also lyrics you need to fix 'I get frightened I could never gather birds enough to carry 'round your heart,' 'I shirk-a like a losing dog,' and 'It's in the un-tired eyes of the laughing child.'

All in all, this is a magical song, and Matsson depicts the feelings of displacement, and a lack of belonging so elegantly. It really resonates with me. TMOE <3 ...Hope that helped guys.
