This song is addressing a person who has been going through life following the crowd, content just having sheep mentality rather than being an individual or their authentic self (as indicated by "dyed in the wool" and wanting to hop along with the "giddy throng" through life.) Obviously, this person has lied to himself/herself to the point where he/she has wound up in a very troublesome place...emotional or otherwise.

The speaker is reaching out to this person, letting him or her know that "it's only life." Everyone goes through hard times. The speaker is willing to be there for this trouble person, but the troubled person is either in denial or isn't receptive to having someone reach out to them ("I call you on the telephone, won't you pick up the receiver?")

The speaker can relate to what this person is going through ("I've been down the very road you're walking through") and wants to reach out very selflessly.

The part about the "future calling" is the most poignant part of this whole song. The speaker is living his life, embracing forward momentum while his friend/lover has been unsuccessful at bringing him down and holding him back with him/her. "I never drank your potion and I know it breaks your heart." The speaker knows he has to leave his friend/lover behind (as far as negative energy or ideas go), but is more than willing to be supportive while this person is in need of emotional support.

This song has obvious references to Alice In Wonderland, but I don't remember much of that story. Maybe someone else has a more thorough interpretation.

Nevertheless, this song is beautiful and very encouraging when you feel hopeless and alone. The speaker is very self-aware and brutally honest, as he speaks to a somewhat toxic friend or lover, trying to help them out of their deep despair.
