I always took this song to be a sort of melancholy satire about how people get totally locked up in everything material and superficial. A dad sacrifices his son for a castle, a man has a wife just for appearances. I take the last line as: we all have flaws and we're all ugly in some way or another so we need to accept it rather than try to change it and in the process lose sight of oneself.
