The way it was explained to me, and I do agree with this, the song is poking fun at Mormons. To my understanding, the original members of the band were all raised Mormon but were excommunicated or fell away or something like that. So lines like, "Gave birth to many friends" mormons are known to have BIG families with lots of kids. "Who seem to have a problem with you...Who covered our lockers in glue." I think that is eluding to how they were unwelcome in Missouri and tarred and feathered and driven out of the state. "We were strangers, And we were pilgrims" refers to their migration to utah. Basically a HUGE group of people wandering off towards the west. "Role models of the family man, Pioneers and patriarchs, Patriots and matriarchs" all refer to tantamounts of the religious preachings. Family is at the core, pioneers [see above] patriarch, family, patriots, they strongly believe in supporting the gov't and leaders and the laws of the land. "Staking out the promised land" another reference to utah and/or wyoming aka zion, the promised land. Decoder rings is a stab at the "CTR" rings they were. Guerrillas could refer to how the missionaries show up at your door step and preach.
I believe they still were mormons and still are to this day. Travis Barker (the drummer for Blink-182 and the first album of the Aquabats, Fury of the Aquabats) stated that they were a bit too religious for his liking.

@camS142 This is wrong, Chad, Christian, and Ian are all still LDS, as were many past members. The song is about the 2000 Stripling Warriors from the Book of Mormon.
