Just glancing at the bloody TITLE of this song (I don't even have to hear it - it's already playing in my mind) brings me back to 8th grade and the beautiful Swedish amazon who let me borrow her ABBA cassette tape (the one where they are drinking champagne in a limo on the cover). Oh my gosh - the smells, the faces, the rooms, the classmates, the teachers, the self-consciousness, the unrequited prepubescent yearning for Scandinavian beauty -it ALL COMES BACK again...like a boomerang!
I was at an international school abroad during 8th and 9th grade. It was all new to me. I had never been around so many kids from diverse nations. There were these gorgeous Nordic gals in my class. And I was a scrawny kid who hadn't even stopped playing with toy cars or gotten my first zit yet. They were tall - and blonde - and graceful. They were fully developed women. I was barely up to their chests. They were good at sports - they were serious students... and most of them were even friendly and would actually TALK to me sometimes. It blew my 13 year-old mind.
ABBA, and this song in particular, encapsulates my nostalgically idealized love for Nordic feminine beauty. The names of those girls are still like magic to me. I hope to tell them all this some day in heaven. Don't laugh.
That's why years after learning to love ABBA I discovered I also love ACE of BASE!
Dang - God Almighty created some lovely creatures who left a powerful imprint on my all-too-human mind.
