This song is directed towards the hypocritical "church people" who claim the name of Christ, but don't actually follow the Word. Like the people who treat church like it's a place where only perfect people are allowed and those who are different or "more sinful" than the rest are judged and looked down upon by the church. "I hate religion" is Brook Reeves saying that he is tired of those kinds of people and organized religion as a whole, but he still very much loves and follows God.
Can't have it both ways. God was very clear in the Bible about worshiping on the Sabbath and worshipping together. You view of church is warped. Most people who don't attend and/or were raised by doubters unfortunatley have your view. May I suggest you research who gives the most to charites in this country and around the world (as well as saving babies; finding homes and jobs for families; helping with adoptions and food pantries; etc). It is those horrible little judgmental church people who KNOW they sin. They sin no less or no more than Atheists and disgruntled Christians....

The ONLY difference is they are at least attempting to better themselves.
