I've always loved this song. But I don't know what it means, really.

I used to think it was a response to wealthy gay men who seek approval in mainstream culture. But there's too much in the song about repressing homosexuality and wealthy gay men don't really repress their homosexuality because they're more accepted in urban areas, or whatever or something.

So, my best guess is that we're talking about all-embracing christians who "love" everyone. And basically the song is about christians or "progressives" repressing their hate for gays in favor of "loving" them and trying to "reform" them or work them into a puritanical worldview that avoids talking about sex (AKA gay sex which still makes them uncomfortable in spite of being all "love is love, man"). It's easier if they just admit they hate gays. "Detain us, Contain us, You have a right to hate us ... Would you please fucking hate us." Just give us that opposition, it's easier to deal with than your repressed feelings of hate, right?

Then again, it could be a gay person who struggles with being homosexual because they think it's "not normal." But that interpretation is boring. That's a callous thing to say, but Limp Wrist is way more interesting than that after-school special theme.

Alright, it's definitely about people trying to ingratiate themselves to homophobes by denying that they're "colorful" ... by saying things and recanting because it would be judged as homosexual ("i am on my knees Oh no! not on my knees!"). It doesn't even have to be a gay person, it could be a straight person worried about not pleasing a homophobic culture. But still, I don't understand the last part in that context.

"Detain us, Contain us, You have a right to hate us. Detain us, Sedate us, Would you please fucking hate us"

I...
