Lyric discussion by Auberyn

You know, I've usually seen these lyrics printed as: "Don't wanna take it and just say it as I saw." Initially, I heard it as: "Don't wanna take it, and just say it isn't so." But I don't know. "I wanna take it and just say it as I saw" actually makes more sense, contextually.

Regardless, it's an interesting song. Seems like it's about her wanting the guy not to balk or back down because of her abrasiveness and honesty, and if he isn't persistent in pursuing her, or runs away from her being real with him and sceptical of his affections, that's a deal-breaker for her. She doesn't want him to cower or run away from her strong personality; she wants him to prove that he can handle her intelligence and confidence, and can meet her head-on. At least, that's how I'm hearing it.

As a female who loves a feisty partner who is up for intellectual debate (and even disagreement) and can hold their own against me (not many can) rather than backing down or acting benign, I relate to this song strongly in that way. The passive, non-confrontational attitude makes me want to scream. I just want to demand, "Oh, really, is that ALL you've fucking got? Come at me, bro!" Ahaha.
