like most magic numbers songs its a song about the dark sides of love but in the style of a soppy, sweet love song. an amazing style that always allows for mixed opinions. if you're in a relationship it helps with the melody playing, if its when you're going through a breakup the lyrics can be easily relatable. the magic numbers ar one of my favourite bands solely for this reason,
now onto my thoughts about the meaning of the song.
i feel its about a guy seeing the girl he loves in a new relationship, they may have been together at some time but chances are they weren't. After seeing this he feels the need to tell her, "you never had it" basically saying that he never had her in that way to start with, but if he wants her in that way he needs to tell her, its him trying to convince himself. perhaps at the start he has even convinced himself that she likes him. but he never said anything because he has fears of being hurt. its a situation most people know, very relatable and very heart wrenching. "yet still i wanna learn, i just cant get out of bed, no i cant" he's convincing himself not to say anything for risking that the friendship or bond of some kind will be broken even though he wants to learn whether she does care for him in the same way.
