This is an interesting one, as it uses both the train and sailing metaphors. The singer mentions going separate ways multiple times ("I gotta get away as you wave goodbye" and "You reach land; I hope to sail"). The line "I got to get away" makes me think the singer needs to leave a person or situation, rather than going off to war as bucky1337 interpreted (we usually don't think of going off to war as "getting away"). As with MANY of Pinback's songs this one strikes me as two [recently] former lovers seeking new paths, new beginnings.
