Lyric discussion by JonHolcombe

This song is like a piece of visual art. Certainly the title "Nighthawk Postcards" evokes the image of Edward Hopper's famous painting "Nighthawks." The lyrics paint the picture of an inebriated evening in an urban community; Los Angeles more specifically. The hip jazz accompaniment to the lyrics serves as a soundtrack to these drunk nights. Wandering around from bar to pool-hall and the things and people one would see along the way. Slick pool hustlers, groups of sailors with the weekend off and used car salesmen are all part of the experience. The singer is alone. This is important to note because it seems that the loneliness is the motivation to seek company in bars. The loneliness drives the singer to stay up all night and when the singer confronts the fact that he is looking for romance, he concludes that it's not likely that he will be successful and resigns himself to another "smashed weekend."
