For me, this song seems to be a lot sadder than many of the comments seem to see it.. Rather than being a celebration of being unique, I feel like she's lamenting her mundane life and wishing for something to change it, no matter what that something is (as in the line 'somebody rip my heart out and leave me here to bleed' - even if someone hurts her, she would accept that because she just wants to feel alive). Back when I was really young and I used to listen to this song (can't believe it came out in 2002, wow) I remember the first verses before the chorus would always make me feel really sad for some reason, I can't really explain why.. anyway, yeah, I can relate a lot to this song.
I definitely hear what you do. I kinda feel the melancholy in this song as well. I guess we all want to be unique and special and it's not always a fun road... if that makes any sense.
