To me, this song is about two people in two completely different times in their lives.
The first part is when they're young and reckless and he secretly wanted to have that American dream with her (I dreamed it was ours, that we just didn't know yet).
But maybe he didn't have the guts to fully commit yet (She looks back in ways as I wait too long) and he wanted to wait until he'd matured enough to be with her (But I'm still not the man that I thought I'd be)
Then the second, more slower element is where he's finally realised where he should have been the whole time (with her).
