I've noticed this song playing in several trailers for vampire films and developed my take from there: The speaker has given up on himself - "If I only could" - and has resorted to a life of indifference or denial - "It doesn't hurt me." If he could be in control of his own universe (and put God in his place) then life might be worth living...If he could find someone to enslave, or feed off of - "c'mon darling, let me steal this moment from you now...let's exchange the experience" - he would feel powerful rather than helpless, living with a purpose, albeit a malicious one...Even a malicious purpose is better than having none. I'm not 100% on this.
