I interpret that song as autobiographical about Ronnie James Dio's past: There's a crack in the Rainbow - Dio was in Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (which was nothing else than Elf (Dio's previous band) where Blackmore took over the guitarist spot) and after Blackmore threw Dio out there was a crack in the Band, it became shit afterwards There's a Hole in the Sky - A song from Black Sabbath (Sabotage, 1975) "You believed in something, now it's just a lie" - Dio believed in both band, was kicked out of both of them, at least the Sabbath kick-out was made out of lies (the infamous studio story during Live Evil). And it explains how Dio, despite all this didn't hide or ran in a circle of going back to past things but "ran", made step forward, that was his Solo band, creating successful albums (Holy Diver, Last in Line)

What I get from this song is how his previous band mates didn't understand the burning passion that drove Dio. As ShadowAngel85 mentioned, this song describes how Dio survived their lack of faith and rejection.

The song starts by describing how being rejected shattered his universe(There's a crack in the rainbow/ There's a hole in the sky) because he believed in their empty promises.

He fell from grace(No jokes from the jester/ Not a laugh from the clown) and is frustrated.
