I believe this song is about an unrequited love. The singer, is in love with someone who leads him on, but who ultimately does not love him back. And it's a shame, considering how much he cares for the other, noted right away in the first line: "It's always a relief to see you again."
Even though he feels this strong connection towards the one he's singing to, they have their differences: "we hate different things" (and of course, opposites attract).
The "illusion" and "confusion" lines were tough to figure out, but they make sense now. Because the singer is lead on, he is obviously "confused" and has the "illusion" that he'll one day attain that love in return.
