I lost my partner of 10 years in November 2011. So I could be biased here but to me this sounds like she's singing to a partner who passed away. She wasn't in the room when they passed as she didn't know how to watch them leave and now she's singing about the loss of who they were and the hope and strength that knowing them has given her.
The tone is hopeful yet mourning and to me the past tense speaks deeper than someone walking out of your life. It has a finality, a yearning for something forever lost, that isn't just gone because of circumstances but gone because they are impossibly out of reach. The following line to me doesnt speak of memories only, but the references classically indicate someone who has passed:

I think its a romantic interest because of three lines:

To me these lines speak of romantic love rather than familial. The reference to fire in this sense normally references some form of passion, the inhaling the scent could be familial but the desire to breath the air she did before he left, indicates a yearning not only to smell him again but has a sense of personal longing that I think can only reference ones partner and the desire to feel so incredible close to them.
I do think the song can have personal meaning for everyone and to me its a very powerful song indeed, but imho I think it has to be about the passing of a partner. (but then as said, im biased)
