Anyway, after reading the beginning again.. maybe he's saying that he's heard of too many dysfunctional relationships or experienced bad luck in the past, but right now he's got a good thing going that he knows will never come again since he's unwilling to pursue another woman like her. He might be making the conscious decision to settle down or run with her, he's just unsure what she wants.
