I think it's about a man who is unwilling to give up on love. He found a woman who is beautiful and smart and he'll follow her to the ends of the earth.. however, things aren't perfect and they occasionally lie and hurt each other, probably verbally. He does not want to put forth the effort if she's just going to lead him on though and he envisions a day when she'll want to be free.. "wolf is on the run" and he'll "step aside" to give her the freedom she demands. My favorite part is "they cannot take away what you have given me". I think it's a testament to how fulfilling the relationship is, perfect or not, permanent or not. There is a small religious reference "they know not what they do, forgive them of their sins".. that part I haven't quite figured out. If you just heard that part and the chorus, you'd think it was a contemporary Christian song. But obviously he's talking about a woman he is madly in love with.
