I think all those answers sound really theological but I think the song is about a person who from time to time mourns the death of a close friend or family member. The song can be Christian and not speak specifically about Christ. The song regardless has the hope of new life that only the death and resurrection of Jesus can provide. I feel like I only "know my dad in part" because he is gone. There's so much I wished I would have asked of him to know him better.
