Song is about dysfunctional families, amoral people; crab mentality. It's about how difficult it is to be original, or relatively successful, to the dismay of others with low self-esteem. It's about the disillusionment of young adulthood.
I completely agree as I feel I've experienced this. My family is so personality-deficient and doesn't appreciate other's personality or individuality (my own). I've overcame doubt my entire life and make more money than my parents ever imagined I could. I believe in the fundamental concept of self-improvement which has guided my own desires to develop my own personality. It's impossible to think how people inhibit themselves by attempting to oppress other's personality and individuality when that is what makes the world intriguing and interesting.
