'I don't mind the people staring/ 'Cause I know they never see me anyway'

I really identified with that line. It means that the person could be ashamed of their true selves, afraid of ridicule if they really did know him/her--and it could also be a bluff: they DO mind when people stare, and lament the fact that no one truly knows them.

The end of the song is what really brought me to tears. In this context, the poem is basically stating that every person is here for a short time, and 'to love them while they live' and 'mourn for when their dead'. We are all unique, and no one in the entire universe will ever be like us. You, me--we will never occur again--so it's addressing the tragedy that some people aren't appreciated until it's too late--or never appreciated at all. It's an anthem to be yourself, even in the face of ridicule, and to reach the state of singularity that this atmosphere of conformity works to hard to suppress.

So for everyone that's had the pleasure of hearing this song--this is powerful and quite a treat! Read the poem too; it's tear-jerking.
