Carl Sagan was actually responsible for the contents that went on the gold record that was attached to the Voyager spacecraft, and his wife was Ann Druyan who also wrote about his work and helped with his show "Cosmos". It's a bit of a stretch but that's my best guess. And the husband-wife thing would make the "love affair" line make sense.
