This is thematically a really archetypical Xiu Xiu song for the most part. Definitely about misery and loneliness and self hatred/self harm. I'm curious, however, about the lines, "Have you seen your face as of late? The hippopotamus is beloved;
Half a crocodile hanging out of its mouth with the village rejoicing"... they feel distinctly metaphorical in some sense but i can't really place them. anyone else have any particular interpretations of those lines?
Hey, I know you posted this almost a year ago but I wanted to chime in on the Hippo line. I've interpreted it as a reference to those with eating disorders.

As for the crocodile part I'm not totally certain. That could potentially change the entire meaning or it could just be their to pad the metaphor. But I heard it as a sarcastic jab at one with an eating disorder, calling them fat but worded as a backhanded compliment. That topic definitely hasn't gone untouched by Xiu Xiu (Chocolate Makes You Happy being the first example...

That topic definitely hasn't gone untouched by Xiu Xiu (Chocolate Makes You Happy being the first example to come to mind) so I wouldn't be too surprised if it's something along those lines. I could be wrong though!

Normally crocodiles would eat the hippopotamus. it's reversed here. basically saying, if you've killed the thing trying to kill you...
