Alright, I see two possible interpretations of this.
(1) The song is about the singer's first love.
(2) The song is about a relationship that ends in the death of the person about whom the song was written.
I could go through the song line-by-line, but that would take forever, so I won't. But that's how I see it.
I agree. He is talking about his first love from long ago or he's talking about the death of a relationship at his hands...his choice.
