I think this song is actually more about a person letting go of their emotions and moving to their own personal "limbo", so that they won't have to deal with the pains they are facing

Into the middle we go Into the middle we go (The person is deciding to start living emotionally unattached)

I smell a rat and just in case I set up traps and you're the bait Surprise, surprise (He's telling some other person that he has stopped caring for whatever conflict they had, and that they will only be hurting themselves by continuing it)

If curiosity kills cats, we better We better teach the cat to fight back (He's going to fight back and give up his passionate curiosity so that it doesn't end up hurting him further)

I'm waiting for you I don't know why, when you always take your time Into the middle we go Let's see you try to kill me (There's an obvious anger in the choruses towards the other person, as he exclaims that he/she won't be able to hurt him now that he's abandoned his emotions)

Our eyes fell to the floor Your eyes and mine (Portrays the shame on both sides of the conflict)

The middleman straddles the fence He never loses, never wins, with confidence And more power to him! He doesn't need a telescope To figure out he's jumping rope hand over fist (The person, now the middleman, feels like he's neither winning or losing in his life, but believes that this is a good thing. However, although he's in a calmer state of mind now, he still has his hand over fist and therefore holds some pent up anger in the back of his mind)
