I think she's talking about how, although the custom of altruism typically propagated by western culture begs us to be open and share ourselves with others very openly, she's saying that we should "grow tall skin," or rather a protective barrier around ourselves, allowing in only the precious few that have proven worthy of our trust, because "bad weeds grow tall."
