What I deduce from wiki is that the Isle of Avalon is where King Arthur was taken to be recovered from the battle of Camlann and ultimately buried there.

'Brought here to die and be transferred into the earth and then for rebirth'

Why this strongly refers to King Arthur is because of the legend that Arthur was believed to have never died, instead, just retreated to safe haven to return/reborn again.

About the celtic legend and none but seven returned from avalon, the reference is to the famous poem 'The Spoils of Annwn': http://igerne.tripod.com/annwn.htm

An interpretation of this poem is given here : http://www.timelessmyths.com/celtic/voyages.html#Spoils

In short, "Arthur and his band of warriors tried to steal a magic cauldron, by raiding the otherworld, which in the Welsh literature, it was called Annwfn. They raided several otherworldly fortress, but the expedition was failure. Arthur lost all but six of his men. "

The magic cauldron described here is also believed to be the predecessor of the Holy Grail.
