To me, this sounds like Maynard's hatred to a religious leader, perhaps a higher up like the pope, or a cult leader etc. Or perhaps the personification of Christianity itself. Or it could be the perspective of a Christian towards another religion... Oddly it fits perfectly to the storyline of the new Dexter series from Dexter's perspective towards DDK.
He isn't Catholic. In fact, he was raised Baptist by his mother and that's so different from Catholicism. (He would know too little about the Pope to honestly 'hate" him.) Maynard had a hard life which could possibly have involved some form of abuse. He handled it with music and comedy. I bet he's one complex man, as well as one obviously talented one. His fire and brimstone lyrics seem very Baptist to me:)
