I think that "hacked away plateau" is saying there can't be any love where there is no difficulty. Climbing a mountain is a hard, arduous undertaking that would be considerably easy if halfway up it flattened out into a plateau. What Callahan's saying essentially, is that love can't exist without struggle.

@mallune (I just thought that it meant an plateau that have been hacked away, like carved and consumed, by a Valley Maker and therefore is no more a plateau. I mean: a valley IS an hacked away plateau. On why there should be no love in a valley, I don't know how to answer...)

@mallune Think of how a plateau might be formed, particularly by erosion. The river hacks away at the rock-face over the course of countless eons. It is unyielding, unfailing, unrelenting, and what's left in the end is a mighty and majestic plateau, from which one can view the entirety of the landscape.
