Seems to me he's devised a purely fictional narrator. Let's say a musician, who is established and successful (accolades) for doing something in particular, but intends now to go in a different direction. "You" in this setting is his inner voice warning him about the consequences of changing up his style. He's arguing back to that voice that he fully understands what he's doing, including the potential impact it could have on his career. In fact, he accepts that he may very well be "killing" his career before it has a chance to kill him.
In a way, not dissimilar to another fictional voice he uses to discuss the creative process in "Fraud".
