I'm sorry, but i really don't see it as a sad song at all. Everyone is going to die at one point and all he is saying is that when he dies he hopes he gets to hang around rather than just move on. He's saying he's interested to see where the world goes after he's dead - a natural curiousity i think.
When he says now i've become a ghost - he's realising that it may have been a bit hasty and that it would be better if he had people to share this experience with (again, a natural human experience i think)
Beyond the superficiality of it, i (personally) see someone who just wants to see beyond his life, wants to know what will happen to him and his memory, to his family and to the entire world.
I think it's a song that taps into everybody's natural curiousity about what comes after.
