I think the meaning of the song is very clear without need for extra interpretation; the lyrics supply their own meaning. We will get extra context when the film comes out, however, in terms of the part played by the various birds in the story. After all, the three birds can be seen in the Imaginaerum symbol, so they must be important. ;-)
Correction as Estelindis said and "Wisdom nor pride" and "Beauty nor rest".

This song - in fact pretty much the whole album - really gets to me. The music and the lyrics are so beautifully written, with such immense passion and feeling, I can almost imagine Tuomas sitting alone by an attic window weeping as he wrote it - it's deep as hell. I'm only 26, but I get the theme of having lost connection with childhood and just yearning for that innocence.
This is so different from anything Nightwish have done before, but at the moment...

This is so different from anything Nightwish have done before, but at the moment nothing compares to listening to this song in the dark with good headphones and getting that icy chill all through your body. Sure there'll be haters (a la Tarja vs Anette) but this is my favourite album of any artist since the day it came out here and I think it will be for some time to come.
Speaking of which though, I don't like how Troy's part just kinda barges in like it does. The song starts off so sweet and slow and builds into these epic melodic semi-choruses and then all of a sudden all that melody disappears into a very out of place repetitive chant. I understand it's some form of purification incantation which is sweet, but it just doesn't suit the song. It just interrupts the song for me. Luckily, the rest more than makes up for it :D
The part chanted by Troy is actually as follows:
Gar tuht river Ger te rheged
