This song is about being inspired by San Francisco, and accepting the ups and downs of life to make the most of it.
I really like these lines:
"and the world exhales..." (Night falls, normally a time to relax and slow down) "...and none of us can even stand still!" (But instead the singer and his friends are running around seeking new and exciting experiences all night).
I don't know what "Chicago rooftops will take me away from the ugly city" means - anyone have an idea? The 405 is a highway near Los Angeles, a little ways south of San Fransisco. I suspect the "ugly city" is LA, as contrasted with the beautiful San Fran. But no idea what Chicago has to do with anything.
I found a acoustic version, where the singer and the guitarist is playing on a riverboat in amsterdam.
He says the song is about being inspired of the places they've been (on tour, i suppose), one being amsterdam, another one Chicago, SF etc...

Chicago is just another city they went to and enjoyed. This song on the surface is about San Fran, but Chris also said it's just a tribute to the other great cities they have traveled to.
