I think the part about the shady dirt road feeling cool beneath his feet means he's not really going anywhere. He doesn't get to where he's going in a day (stopping and going) due to dysfunction. I believe the dysfunction is drug induced. I feel that way because of how the next section is worded...searching my mind and in a daze. It's weird in the first stanza he says get to where he's going in a day which seems like efficiency not drugs the corresponding section in stanza 2 is get to where he's going in a daze which seems like drugs (smoking bowls on the highway during long drives). He can't do either of these things and is forced to stop and go along the way. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this is due to drug induced dysfunction. The drugs have compromised the efficiency approach to living and the casual carefree drug use of the past is no longer a possibility.
