You left with no goodbye, not a single word was said,
No final kiss to seal ANY SINS,
I had no idea of the state we were in.
I know I have a fickle heart and A bitterness,
And a wandering eye, and a heaviness in my head…
But don't you remember?
Don't you remember
The reason you loved me before?
Baby, please remember me once more.
When was the last time you thought of me?
Or have you completely erased me from your memory?
I OFTEN THINK ABOUT WHERE I WENT WRONG,
AND THE MORE I DO, THE LESS I KNOW.
But I know I have a fickle heart and a bitterness,
And a wandering eye, and a heaviness in my head,
But don't you remember?
Don't you remember
The reason you loved me before?
Baby, please remember me once more.
Gave you the space so you could breathe,
I kept my distance so you would be free,
AND hope that you’d find the missing piece
To bring you back to me.
Why don't you remember?
Don't you remember
The reason you loved me before?
Baby, please remember me once more.
When will I see you again?
I think this song is about self-doubt and feeling insecure about yourself when a relationship ends. It's hard to let go when you don't know what you did wrong. She'd believed that her boyfriend loved her, yet he left w/o any warning or explanation. She can't make sense of it--the only explanation seems to be that he's just forgotten her! She acknowledges that she has faults, but why can't he remember that he loved her despite the faults?
The only thing she could do was give him space to figure it out on his own, and hope he'll come around. She's struggling to have faith to do this (faith that he did love her), though, because he gave up on the relationship so suddenly and abandoned her--she wonders if he is remembering her at all. Please remember the good lovable parts of me, I want to be loved by you. It's like she wrote this song about my life!! The end of the story is that you give them the space b/c you have no other choice and 2 years later when you try to ask "don't you remember," they get engaged to someone else a month later. Didn't those 6 years with me mean anything to him? "Baby please remember me once more."
The next chapter is "Someone Like You," which Adele has described as being about her imagining looking him up in 40 years and finding he's settled down and happy with someone else. But it's still not really over for her!
When will I see you again?
