I thought that in legend, Medusa was pretty, so pretty infact that she ended up with Poseidon and an enraged Athena (the Goddess whose temple she was a maiden in) turned her into a Gorgon as punishment. If this is true then the lines in the song about Medusa being young and her mother lying about her being pretty makes no sense...

Athena punished Medusa and her sisters by turning them into Gorgons. Athena couldn't punish Poseidon, as he was both male and a God, so she took out her anger on the sisters.
