I think it's about being drawn to an "inappropriate" relationship of some kind (for example older woman/very young man; or cheating on a significant other; or boss/employee). The couple are shoulder to shoulder in frequent proximity, due to circumstance. They might inadvertently touch while in this acceptable environment, or maybe just eye-to-eye too long and too often, and they think it goes undetected by coworkers or coeds. Timid advances. They are kidding themselves that it also goes undetected by each other, because the air is charged with electricity between these two. It feels awkward inside because of keeping the attraction a secret, wanting to break the rules, but not daring to name it or act on it. Not daring to cross the line, which keeps getting blurred the longer they flirt indiscriminately. Have to reel it back in after each advance, so as not to jeopardize losing or ruining a good thing they have. The relationship remains fun and playful and innocent, friends. Makes makes them smile ear to ear. It's exhilarating. Within a year the relationship ends as it began, due to circumstance. Never had to face the potential rejection they avoided by not advancing. When it is over, feels like being stranded in a desert. And they only speak of it to the dust.

I fully agree with your interpretation. I made an account just so I could tell you that. It's been years I have listened to this song and could never figure out what it meant, and your version just makes complete sense! Thx

I'm curious. Is talking to youself as rewarding as holding a conversation with a 20 year old sexualized child? And are you really so important that your best friend is a music site (well, many music sites and assorted blogs). Here's a suggestion: tell your current mate of your entire life. Let him/her in to your secret world. Now that would be honesty. That would be maturity. That would be REAL freedom. Oh, not in your decade-old routime. Well than maybe because the life you have is all you have ever wanted, only you're bright enough to be too embarrassed...

FYI. I made this account just so I could tell you that. I'm new here. I served in the war. I had a dying mother. I want this song played at my wedding. I agree with your interpretation. THAT is your life. One crutch one lie after another. Too bright and too strong to have sold youself out, but hey...your choice.
