At first I thought this song was about a breakup because of the "but you're not here anymore" line, but I don't think that matches up with the rest of the song or what Andrew described this album to be about. He said the album is "not about break ups and make ups. It’s about the stuff in between, kind of the grittier stuff." My guess is the song is about a serious struggle they are having in their relationship at the moment. "Another long winter trying to fight this freeze" means simply that they're working through another conflict; however, he has "never felt this kind of cold before." This relationship appears to be on the edge of destruction, and that's why she's not there anymore. My guess is they're currently on a break, or a trial separation of some sort.
The song gives plenty of hope for the relationship though. He says there is currently ice on the lake. I believe that's a metaphor for the current status of the relationship. But even when their relationship is frozen over, and it begins to crack under the weight of their lives, there's nothing to truly worry about because he knows it will never break.
