I heard this the first time when I watched "Queen of the Damned".
It was the first song of the Kidneythieves I heard, in fact.
And I started to look for more songs afterwards, which probably says enough about my reaction.
When I cut it loose from the movie, it could be about someone that is life threatening ill, whose life is fading away, a teenager probably. He/She looks out of the window of the hospital at night and dreams of all the things he/she wants to do before he/she is dead. All the things he/she is missing.
The hospital picture comes from "Oceans wide of salted red", which means blood, I think. Desert skies, well, desert skies are known for their beautiful stars. Like I said, at night.
The sun reclines, metaphor for life fading away?
Then, there is of course the mention of the lover. Perhaps someone he/she loves but never had the chance to tell?
But I can couple it to the movie really good. Becoming a vampire, being bound to the night, the blood referring to the new life, the lover of the reason why she "chose" this life. Great choice for the soundtrack.
